Gatsby essay
Describe how one individual changed throughout the text and explain why the change was important to the text as a whole.
The golden girl, Daisy was caught up in a dream world and this was her way of living. She lived off the wealth of other men and did so for her pure pleasure and enjoyment. she was to die for, quite literally and is used by Fitzgerald to represent the idea of the American dream in the Great Gatsby.
At the start of the novel, Daisy was seen as unhappy and depressed caught up in her relationship with Tom Buchanan which had its issues with Tom’s side mistress and affair Myrtle Wilson. During their marriage Daisy had a daughter, which she hopes would be a beautiful little fool ‘I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.'” Daisy says this as knowing she has a daughter that life isn’t fair to women and they are treated as ‘losers’ no matter how much money they have they would never be top dog.
Daisy lived in East egg the more fashionable of the two. Neighbouring across the bay lived Gatsby who threw several large allegiant parties in hope for Daisy to attend. Gatsby and Daisy had been in love before when they were young before Gatsby left to the war Daisy promised she would wait for his return. But instead chose to marry Tom Buchanan. During the summer of 1919 Daisy through the means of her cousin Nick Carraway meets Gatsby again and appears to fall head over heels for her past lover saying “ I wish we could just run away.” and “All my life. I wish it could always be like this.” But the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy is very uneven on one side Gatsby is in obsessively in love with Daisy when she treats Gatsby and Tom as equals It is clear to see that Daisy wouldn’t leave Tom for Gatsby and treats their love as a summer flume.
The carelessness of Daisy and one-sided personality comes out towards the end of the novel, falling short of Gatsby’s love ideals Daisy can be described as beautiful and charming, but also fickle, shallow, bored. Nick characterizes her as a careless person “who smashes things up and then retreats behind her money.” Daisy proves her real nature when she chooses Tom over Gatsby, while Gatsby takes the blame for the murder of Myrtle Wilson as he loves Daisy. Realising Gatsby has wasted his time pursuing Daisy, he is murdered in his own pool while instead of attending his funeral Daisy decides to run away with Tom leaving no forwarding address.
Looking back at Daisy character, Throughout the novel, she changes from being upset with her life and realising she is treated unfairly, to falling back in love with Gatsby, then returning to her current relationship and running away. Daisy seems to think that she can do what she wants without needing to worry about the consequences of her actions, Fitzgerald uses Daisy Buchanan to represent the American Dream because she is wealthy, sought after, and unattainable. When the consequence of her actions resulted in the death of Gatsby.
Hi Jack,
It is clear to me from this that you understand Daisy as a character and I completely argree with your observations.
You need to ensure this is set up properly, with a clear essay structure: introduction, body and conclusion.
You also need to avoid just telling me about Daisy. Isolate three key points you want to make about her character i.e. three moments in the text where you think the way she changes is clear to the reader. You then need to provide evidence of these three points and discuss how, knowing that she changes in the way you are describing, this development is important to the text as a whole. Does it teach us something? Entertain us? Help us understand other characters? From the looks of it, you are discussing Daisy in relation to key ideas so I encourage you to think about how her character is used to teach us something.
Use the keywords from the question throughout your essay to guide your answer.
